The mission of Fresh Start Surgical Gifts is to transform the lives of disadvantaged infants, children, and teens with physical deformities caused by birth defects, accidents, abuse, or disease through the gift of reconstructive surgery and related healthcare services. Since 1991, Fresh Start Surgical Gifts has been dedicated to transforming the lives of disadvantaged youth with physical deformities by providing comprehensive reconstructive surgery at no cost to the patients and their families. Children receive care from world-class, board-certified doctors and surgeons, who remain committed to giving each child a Fresh Start. All the medical professionals generously donate their time and talent to deliver much-needed, highly specialized reconstructive plastic surgery and related treatments.
Our Commitment
Fresh Start commits to long-term, comprehensive restorative surgery and care for all our patients, no matter how long the process takes – whether it is months or several years. Fresh Start patients often require extensive follow-up and years of surgeries and medical services until the best medical outcome has been reached. Fresh Start maintains long-term medical relationships with patients and follow-up surgeries – our average cleft lip and palate patient, for example, requires seven years of dental care and approximately 49 treatments until the best possible medical outcome has been reached.
Children receive reconstructive surgery at six Surgery Weekends at Rady Children’s Hospital (San Diego, CA), three at The University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital (Chicago, IL), and three at University Health (San Antonio, TX) annually.
Dental Clinics serve children requiring more complex dental procedures outside the scope of Surgery Weekends. Dental Clinics are held 13-14 times annually and serve 15-20 children at each Clinic with services ranging from restorative and orthodontic work for children with cleft lips or palates to fillings and more basic care. All dental patients receive education on proper dental hygiene as part of a comprehensive approach to healthcare.
Each year, patients receive complimentary speech therapy services, which grant them the confidence and motivation to accomplish their goals and lead happy and healthy lives. Laser Clinics treat infants, children, and teens each year who suffer from deformities such as port wine stains and burns. Laser treatments also significantly reduce the appearance of scars created by reconstructive surgery.
